Shave your Head and Help Kids Fight Cancer

Let Sheer Bliss Hair Salon, Durham shave your head as part of their fundraising initiative for children with cancer.

Children (and adults) often lose their hair when having cancer treatment. Shaving yours will be a symbolic stand to show you are willing to do what it takes to help. Photo: St Baldricks.

Research is the Key to Cure Cancer

This week the Salon rose to the challenge to join other volunteers raise funds for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a non-profit that has been fighting for these kids since its formation in 2004, two years after the founders had raised a total of $1-million for the cause. By 2012 the organization had raised an incredible $33,518,942-million, boldly and often baldly – by shaving heads. By early February 2013 – in less than two months – a further $2,5561,638 had been raised. But cancer research is severely underfunded, and it is not enough.

Research is the key; which is why every donation made via the St. Baldrick’s Foundation goes directly into the best research to find cures for children who are fighting cancer of one type or another.

Sheer Bliss Takes up the Challenge

Sheer Bliss has embraced St. Baldrick’s challenge to help in their continuing endeavor to improve the chances of children surviving cancer.

“We’ve teamed up to have our heads shaved – to stand in solidarity with kids fighting cancer, but more importantly, to raise money to find cures,” said team leader and barber coordinator, Whitney Obrian, adding, “when we ask for your support, we’re really asking you to support these kids”.

In the 1950s most children who were diagnosed with cancer died. Today 48% of those with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), that attacks the blood and bone marrow, will live. This is the most common type of cancer children suffer from, but there are many other types, and for the kids suffering from those, the prognosis is often not positive.

When you consider that worldwide, 175,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year, you can probably begin to imagine how important every single dollar towards research will be. Can we persuade YOU to become involved?
