It doesn’t matter whether you were born blonde, or your blonde hair came out of a bottle, the blonde persona is real. This is the gospel according to Redken, the dynamic hair product company founded by red-haired American actress, Paula Kent (the ken) and her hairdresser, Jheri Redding (the Red) in 1960.
Redken flashes back in time on their website, revealing that blondes have “a unique personality” irrespective of whether their “blonde ambition” is genetic or created by a hairdresser. They also advise women to take a cue from current trends, adding that they hope it’s blonde, “because they really do have more fun”.
Taking into account the fact (according to the Washington Times) that 75 percent of women color their hair, the Redken team took a closer look at a few of the world’s most iconic blondes.
Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson in 1926, and baptized Norma Jeane Baker), is regarded by many as the most iconic blonde ever. But like her name, Marilyn’s hair wasn’t natural. It came out of a bottle. Yet many believe that it was her transformation from a brunette to a blonde that was the secret of her success as a model – and certainly contributed to her eventual success as an actress.
One thing hairdressing salons like us know is that Marilyn’s platinum blonde look is still one of the most popular worldwide. It enables ordinary people to take on the “blonde attitude” that Marilyn epitomized.
Dolly Parton is another hugely talented blonde bombshell, who, like Marilyn is not a natural blonde. Nevertheless, like Marilyn Monroe, Dolly Parton has often born the brunt of dumb blonde jokes.
She doesn’t care and has been quoted as saying:
“I’m not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes because I know I’m not dumb and I know I’m not blonde”.
Like many before her, and many after, Miss Dolly saw the value of blonde hair as a power tool that could help her become rich and famous.
Madonna, whom some say is one of a number of celebrities who has tried to mimic the one and only Marilyn, said about being blonde, It is “definitely a different state of mind… it really does something different to you… I feel ethereal when I have blonde hair”.
In 1985 an article in Vogue magazine stated: “It has been said that hair color and hairstyle are the final tip off whether or not a woman really knows herself”.
How well do you know yourself? Could platinum blonde hair be the secret ingredient that will help you gain recognition and/or fame and fortune?
