Scientists at the University of Bradford, a public research facility in West Yorkshire, England, have identified a possible cure for gray hair. This follows the discovery that people’s hair turns gray because of hydrogen peroxide that accumulates in the hair follicles and bleaches the hair from the inside out.
And having discovered the cause of gray hair, researchers have also discovered that the effects can be remedied with a brilliant new proprietary treatment: “a topical UVB-activated compound called PC-KUS”, which is a modiefied “pseudocatalase”.
This same treatment may also be used to treat people who suffer from vitiligo, the skin condition that causes skin to loose its pigment, and the condition Michael Jackson claimed made his skin go “white”.
The study was undertaken by Bradford University’s School of Life Sciences, and published in The Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB).
Study author was Professor Karin Schallreuter, a specialist in vitiligo who stated: “To date, it is beyond any doubt that the sudden loss of the inherited skin and localized hair color can affect those individuals in many fundamental ways.
“The improvement of quality of life after total and even partial successful re-pigmentation has been documented.”
The research team studied what they describe as “an international group” of 2,411 people before making their findings.
The report states, “Senile graying of human hair has been the subject of intense research since ancient times. Reactive oxygen species have been implicated in hair follicle melancyte apoptosis and DNA damage. Here we show for the first time by FT-Raman spectroscopy in vivo that human gray/white scalp hair shafts accumulate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in millimolar concentrations”.
The bottom line is that, “This new insight could open new strategies for intervention and reversal of the hair graying process”.
Many women have heralded the discovery as hugely exciting, because for generations we have sought remedies and dyes that will hide gray hair. Now for the first time there is a possible treatment that will get to the root of the problem.
While others are happy to go gray graciously, there is no doubt that not going gray might radically improve the lives of many.
